Thursday I pulled a 22-hour work day running sound at the USAID 50th Anniversary; Vice President Biden spoke and Ethiopian artist Angelique Kidjo performed! The setup was the most stressful I've ever done; I had to setup separate feeds for the teleprompter and green room while avoiding the incandescent lighting cables run around the room which induced a buzz into our audio. All this while under severe time constraints knowing we'd get kicked out of the building for the secret service security check an hour before the show.

Friday night I tour managed for Sharam on the first stop of his Warung Live Release Tour at Josephine in DC. I organized our end of the show with promoters, set up and tore down his DJ setup and generally made sure things went smoothly in the booth. You can see pictures from the event on Glow's Facebook page. Saturday we were at Pure Club in Buffalo, New York where I enjoyed handing out the CD I worked on to some really excited fans.

Sharam Live at Warung Beach Brasil

I've been working for DJ Sharam at Yoshitoshi since April. I spend most of my time producing Sharam's Wildcast and internationally syndicated Yoshitoshi Radio show but occasionally I get involved in a really interesting project like this.
Sharam Live at Warung Beach Brasil is taken from a 10-hour DJ set Sharam did back in May. I was responsible for cutting and editing the audio and have played a significant role in the integrated marketing communications for the album putting together parts of the newsletter, website and social media plan.
It has also risen as high as #17 on the iTunes Dance Album chart.

Well it finally happened. After years of floating around the top ten Ohio University has finally settled in at number one party school in Princeton Review's annual survey. This seems like an apt time to remind everyone that there's more to Athens then couch fires and beer bongs.
Scene unheard is a short documentary about noise and basement house shows I shot during my last year at Ohio University. It showcases a few of the unique house-turned-venues around town alongside perspectives of owners, concerned neighbors and police officials.

A while ago I contributed to this Aquabear Legion Volume 4 compilation on Kickstarter; I've been listening to it non-stop and it's a really great eclectic mix that makes me miss living in such a music-crazed community. It includes a a bunch of tracks from Athens/Columbus bands that played the Spacement: Seascapes, Valleyboys, She Bears, In Silent Movies and Monolithic Cloud Parade. It also features one of my favorite tracks I produced for Whale Zombie's debut LP, Nu Surf.

I'm quoted on page 38 of the premiere issue of Brick Beats Magazine, dedicated to providing an independent look at music in Athens. The thorough article by Allison Maloney features an in-depth look at Athens' house-show culture including references to October's Morguefest, Millions of Michael Jordan's and a neat shot of Whale Zombie.

The Playground's keepers and O'Hearn attribute some inspiration to the success of the Spacement, a now defunct basement venue that left big shoes to fill after going on hiatus following noise violations late last year. Andrew Logan, tenant and organizer of the Spacement during the 2009-2010 school year, spoke candidly of the dozens of shows he helped throw, but remained respectfully in tune with the requirements of the noise ordinance.
"To be super legit, plan bands earlier and deejays later, considering drums are the loudest instrument," Logan suggested, "and have trash cans available. Seriously." Where there is fun to be found, responsibility and support are necessary. Sitting next to me in the basement of The Plaground Logan cracked a grin while expressing all the fun he has had making ordinary strangers dance like maniacs. His birthday celebration, thrown in January, was the Spacement's only exhibition of music so far this year, boasting seven deejays and over 100 guests.

Where is Facebook's Support Staff?

Let me start from the beginning, I work for Yoshitoshi Recordings, a DC-based record label that markets extensively using social media sites like MySpace, Twitter and Facebook. Recently one of our Grammy-winning artists logged into his Facebook account while touring in Europe and was locked out for security reasons. He was asked to flawlessly identify 8 photos of his 5,000 friends…er…fans. Obviously this is an impossible task so we contacted Facebook’s customer support team. We clicked the “Help” button in the lower right hand of the screen, we filled out an “error” report, we attached a screenshot, and then we waited. And waited. And waited…
After a week of missed messages, correspondences from friends and fans, and lost marketing opportunities we found Facebook’s phone number using Google. We pressed 1 for customer support and were told:
“Unfortunately we do not offer phone support at this time, answers to most user inquiries can be found at the help center by clicking on help at the bottom of any Facebook page. The help center includes information on the site’s functionality as well as contact forms for issues that require further support from Facebook. Thank you.”
So they don’t take support calls from users and they don’t answer support inquiries via e-mail but I thought surely at least one of the company’s 1,400 employees handles customer support so I started dialing extension numbers at random. Facebook’s phone system pre-screens callers by name before connecting them to an individual or their voicemail so I had to sound particularly desperate to convince anyone to pickup. It took about twenty tries; her name was Michelle and she informed me customer support was “not her department” and there was nothing she could do for me. She refused to transfer me anywhere and when asked if there was anyone at the company who conducts customer support via phone she stated simply “I don’t know. Not a lot of people here have phones.”
We’ve been locked out for almost a month without a single correspondence from Facebook’s support team. I’ve accepted there’s nothing we can do about it; other frustrated users on the web suggest it’s best to just abandon the account and move on. Public outcry on numerous web-boards show thousands of Facebook non-users are being impersonated by others online and, stifled by Facebook’s support team, their assumed identities continue to slander and defame them.
It’s easy for Facebook to hide behind their curtain while countless users flood their inbox with problems but someday they will have to hire a team that can support their user base. For myself and thousands of others I hope they do it soon.

Update: I sent this article to Facebook’s press team asking for a fact-check and our account was unlocked the next day. Unfortunately it has since been relocked, this time for malware, and we are effectively back at square-one.

Over the past 4 decades DJing has evolved from simply playing records over the airwaves to an internationally recognized art form. From turntablism ( using a turntable as an instrument by manipulating records in a way that creates percussive elements and other sounds not present on the record) to creating mash-ups ( i.e. Girl Talk) this practicum will give students the opportunity to learn about the cultural history of DJing while providing a hands-on environment to learn the essential skills of DJing. From set-up and signal flow to scratching and mixing, we will cover and practice all the various types of DJing elements. Some of the equipment and programs used will be turntables, mixers, CD tables, Kaoss pad, Traktor, Reason and Ableton Live. Come experience the culture of DJing with Pat the Cat and DJ Anlog.

Whale Zombie rejuvenates Athens with lucid riffs, optimism

This article by Dani Purcell was published February 4th on ACRN.com. Excellent coverage - ACRN's editorial staff definitely has its finger to the pulse of the Athens music scene.

Chris Lute stands in his driveway, ear pressed to his cellular phone. He paces the rubble path, politely listening, gesticulating with a Miller High Life in his hand. He received a written warning already. Lute hangs up and explains that two-thirds of Whale Zombie is under scrutiny for allowing multiple households on Brown Ave Internet access -- about twenty users, Lute estimates.

Inside the modest rental, Whale Zombie members nurse Miller High Life and shift equipment amongst the clunky bunch of amps and cables that crowd that the tiny living room. Lute places a crumpled paper on the snare.

“I think we should do what I’m doing here, at the beginning of the show, and then do ‘Jungles,’” guitarist Chris Dodd suggests, fingers treading over the fretboard. “Really slow and spacey and jump on it, like that!” He stomps on the peddle for emphasis. “And go straight in to that whole like,” and plucks a series of arpeggios.

Lute affirms the decision. “What kind of vocal effect should I use now?” he asks Dodd. “Reverb or fuzz or what?”

“Reverb might echo.” Dodd responds.

The two then disagree on how practice should be conducted.

“We were planning out really aggressive, in your face songs so that we would be playing battle rock,” Lute apologizes. “We should have our own battle of bands.”

Dodd suggests Whale Zombie also judge.

Bassist Levi Halter grins as the two deliberate, thumping his Paul McCartney-esque bass – a vintage Kingston that hangs short on the straps and falls mid abdomen.

Dodd pours into a distorted, heavy-echoing introduction. Halter follows him, improvising with ease, embracing simple bass lines that flow beneath Dodd’s more intricate melodies. His surf-rock influence and experience led him to embrace a minimalist approach to composition.

“Before I met them [Dodd and Lute] it was like as pop shit as you can get,” he says. “If you can play those [songs] over and over, it’s all I want to hear.”

Halter remains stationary, his facial expression in an almost constant grin, watching the other two. Lute throws his head into his drumming, a total wild man. He snaps the sticks to the toms and rears them to his face for a split second, tossing his head madly.

Dodd opens the next song with finger-picking that sounds like water, abrasive and suspended before dropping. Although most of Whale Zombie’s songs rely on complex guitar lines, simpler chord structures dominate what Lute designates the band’s “opus.” Lute shouts, his voice dense and echoing, grainy and distorted.

The trio composes songs by “getting in fights until we decide on something.” Lute or Dodd will introduce a section, and each member elaborates with his own inventions until a song takes shape. Whale Zombie members’ perspectives occasionally conflict, the group shrugs off its minor disagreements. “We’re together a lot and that leads to us being critical of our music.” Lute explains.

The band members’ earnest communication reflects their closeness, the catalyst for Whale Zombie’s formation. Lute and Dodd clearly recall a day during Lute’s freshman year in which they had a massive discussion about “everything.” The two decided they wanted to form “really intense experimental band that sent a message.”

Whale Zombie emerged years later, almost accidental in its inception. In 2009, Dodd embarked on a solo acoustic project and requested Lute and Halter accompany him live. The three also played in a “surf rock 60’s revivalist” project, the Eddie Munsters, which crumbled due to lack of “a good combination of people” in the band.

The threesome began playing local shows mid-2009, but remained nameless. Max Wheeler, who resides at Brown Town and books house shows there, was creating a flier for an upcoming show. Wheeler demanded a name. Hardcore bands comprised the bill. Dodd nonchalantly suggested Whale Zombie – “that sounds hardcore, right?”

“Shortly after we just theorized how it did apply to our music and at this point it seems pretty clear,” Lute says.

Whale Zombie’s inclusion of psychedelic, siren-like wails and noises and emphasis on surf-rock style bass and drums seems to justify the group’s name sufficiently. Lute introduces a second probable opus. Dodd builds steady chords up the fretboard which dissipate into recumbent chorus that screeches into dramatic, halted pauses, whining bass carrying vaguely beneath it. Lute acknowledges his appreciation of “gimmicky” instrumental sections – like the introduction of dramatic pauses – as blatant yet essential to the piece.

Despite having penned two self-proclaimed opuses, Whale Zombie is still in its infant stages. Discontent with the scene’s homogeneous atmosphere and limited audience, group is making increasingly frequent bar and house show appearances.

“I feel like we’re constantly trying to change things or try new things but, since we play in Athens all the time, it’s the same people playing,” says Lute. “It’s not a bad thing – it’s just that.”

Whale Zombie aspires to disrupt the exhausted scene, and wants to participate in unconventional or “unusual shows.” Although the trio acknowledges its “sound” is still in developmental stages, they recently decided to send recordings to Pitchfork in hopes of a review.

The threesome recorded in the RTV building with the assistance of local musicians and audio production majors Andrew Logan, Josh Landis and Tim Race. The experience yielded a four-track demo, and provided Whale Zombie with introspect toward its aspirations and improvement in technique. “Tim told me to breath in with my chest and not my abdomen, and now I can sing!” Lute says.

Yet, only a few Whale Zombie songs have lyrics – a significant differentiation between Lute’s and Dodd’s songwriting strategies.

“I have conceptions melody-wise, but lyrically, I kind of draw a blank.” Dodd says. Lute views his pieces in a more “holistic” manner, and chooses to incorporate simple choruses. He feels introduction of a singer might “bastardize” his vision. Although individuals have approached Whale Zombie asking to join them, the band wants to preserve the present line-up. Lute says the inclusion of another member may eventually allow the group to devote “one of us to be dedicated to using weird sound and sampling.”

Whale Zombie plays the Union on Friday with Terrible Twos and We March. They conquer their “home turf” – the Spacement, at 86 N. Lancaster St. – this Saturday evening with Blithe Field, Build Us Fiction and more.

Me and my roommates have spent the first few weeks of school transforming the basement of our house into what we like to call "the Spacement."
The Spacement takes flight this Friday with Spooktober, Run Coward Run will be conducting the launch sequence.
On Saturday DJ Anlog and DJ Abnormality push the Spacement into high orbit for a zero gravity dance party.

If you can't possibly wait for those come to Hip-Hop Shop at The Union tomorrow night 10pm, I'll be spinning old school hip-hop breaks for the open mic. Oh yeah, and I'll be playing chill/trip-hop Athens Pyramids Hookah Bar Friday at Midnight after the Spooktober Show!

My DJ Bag

The folks at Lifehacker have been detailing the contents of their laptop bags and it occured to me that my bag may be of some interest to another DJ out there. With that in mind, here's my bag.

It's a large Timbuktu messenger style bag that I got from my friend David at Hudson Trail.

I keep my laptop in a padded neoprene sleeve within, screen facing out, with my control vinyls alongside to keep them flat.
Here's the goods, my NI Audio 8 DJ interface, Korg nanoPAD, and Olympus DS-40 field recorder.
I roll all of my "straight" cables into a circle and store them flat against my laptop sleeve. Included are the Traktor multi-core cables, USB A-B for the interface and mini-USB for the other two devices. Also, not shown are my 1/4"-XLR output cables (for my mixer) and the obligatory 1/8"-RCA.
I keep my cartridges in a waterproof case with all the associated hardware, including additional weights and a tiny screwdriver for making adjustments.

I use Sony MDR-V700 headphones, if you were thinking of getting a pair, don't. The hinges inevitably break; mine are held together with super glue. Also my 1/8" jack broke so I soldered on a 1/4" so I never forget that pesky adapter.

I bring a Shure SM-58 microphone and a 1/4"-XLR cable to every show though I rarely use it. I hate DJs who abuse their microphone privileges.

Not shown, monster 6-outlet power strip, Apple power supply, Numark mixer power supply, and an iPod-USB cable. Velcro cable-ties are crucial to keep this from becoming spaghetti. It's also important to have an alternate source of music should the computer crash (which mine does more often then I'd like), I bring one vinyl to cover my reboot, an iPod or iPhone (with necessary adapter) work fine too.

I’m generally not a big fan of mash-ups between hiphop and (soft)rock songs, but a project that has mashed up songs from Jay-Z and Coldplay has gotten a lot of attention recently, and it is actually worth listening to. It’s called Viva La Hova, and it combines miscellaneous songs from Jay-Z with Coldplay counterparts in what actually sounds quite good! What I found to be even more interesting is a similar project which uses Death Cab for Cutie songs and pair them with Jay-Z songs.
The Jay-Z / Coldplay mash-up has, as already mentioned, garnered quite a bit of attention from various music media outlets, and it was even mentioned by Chris Martin himself. Albeit a little cryptic because of copyright laws and such, Martin said he enjoyed listening to it, and indirectly encouraged you to go download and give it a spin. The remixes were done by two DJ’s who call themselves Mick Boogie and Terry Urban, and you can download the entire thing at the official Viva La Hova website.
A similar project I stumbled upon by accident is called Death Cab for Hova, and it’s essentially the same concept, but instead of Coldplay it mixes Jay-Z songs with the melodies and lyrics of Death Cab for Cutie. The mixing itself doesn’t sound quite as fluid and well done as the ones on Viva La Hova, but in my opinion Death Cab for Cutie’s songs pair better with hiphop than those from Coldplay. The mixing was done by a guy who goes by alias of DJ An-log, and you can read more about it and listen to the tunes here. I’m especially fond of the mix of Crooked Teeth and Encore called, appropriately enough, Crooked Encore, so be sure to check it out!
